The DUK Festival Monograph, marking our festival’s 10 year anniversary, is a project that will span over 200 pages and tell the story of how a social movement was built; featuring more than 120 murals as well as the entire creative process. We’ll share behind the scenes stories, how the participating artists view DUK, as well as impressions from the community and the changes that have taken place in the city.
The Days of Urban Culture festival from Čačak is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025, marking a decade of continuous work on improving the local community, painting murals, fostering and sustaining urban culture in this city.
The book will be a richly illustrated hardcover monograph, featuring all the murals created during the festival, stories about the festival’s origins and development, interviews with artists from Serbia and abroad, behind the scenes anecdotes, accounts of exchanges between artists from across Europe, Asia, and South America, as well as testimonies and reflections on how neglected corners of the city were transformed into artistic spaces.
By publishing this monograph, we are expressing our gratitude to the community, the people, the artists, and the scenes that have shaped us. At the same time, we’re telling an authentic story about the birth and growth of a festival, the transformation of a local community, the power of social movements, and the importance of street art and urban culture for a city.
About the DUK Festival
The Days of Urban Culture festival was born from a youth initiative to create a space where they could gather, create, socialize, and work. Through project-based funding, they succeeded in building the first skate park in Western Serbia, organizing numerous socio-cultural events for young people, and hosting the city's first graffiti jam. From this, a festival emerged that, over the next 10 years, would transform Čačak from a city not known for street art into one with over 120 murals.
More than 100 artists from around the world, from Japan, Bulgaria, Germany, France, and Spain, all the way to Peru, have painted the facades of Čačak, and these murals now form an unmissable “open-air gallery.” Numerous concerts, skate park competitions, workshops, and exhibitions have been held, and everyone who was part of the festival contributed in their own unique way, making DUK one of the most important street art festivals in this part of Europe.
WHAT THE BOOK WILL CONTAIN
This is not just a mural catalog, but a visual and emotional time capsule. The book will be a richly illustrated hardback monograph, a tribute to 10 years of the DUK Festival. It’s our way of saying thank you to the community, friends, partners, and artists who have shaped the festival over the years.
The book will include:
→ All murals (120+) created during the festival, in high resolution
→ The story of how the festival began, the birth of a social movement, and insights into other segments of DUK
→ Interviews with artists from Serbia and abroad, discussing both their art and their experiences at the festival, including interactions with the local community
→ Behind the scenes: photos, sketches, cranes in the air, laughter, and paint-covered sneakers
→ Stories of exchanges between artists from Peru, Japan, France, Spain, Switzerland, Bulgaria…
→ Testimonies and reflections on how neglected corners of the city became artistic spaces, how this affected the local community, and what it brought to the city
→ The impact on the local community and stories about how the murals are perceived by residents
